The best matchup and what ended up the best game I saw this past week of Basketball :30 … New Boston vs South Webster D4 District Semi at the Convo …the 2 teams played a triple overtime thriller in the regular season that the Jeeps won 63-61 … Sunday afternoon at the Round House both teams were at full strength which showed as both teams opened the game on fire – as all of the “pieces” showed up in the scorebook : the Tigers were led by 6-7 Tyler Caldwell’s 11 points on 3 triples and a deuce … off the bench Marcus Saunders added 6 points, PG Jerome McKinley 4 pts & the big man in the middle Kyle Sexton chipped in 2 pts … on the South Webster side of the scoreboard the marque post player for the Jeeps Shiloah Blevins led the SWHS scoring with 8 pts, Tanner Voiers 6, Brayden Bockway 3, & Jacob Ruth added 3 … the 2 teams combined for what has been in the D2/D3 games 3 quarter scores ! New Boston 23 South Webster 20 end of 1 … the So Webster defense tightened in the 2nd as the Jeeps only allowed the Tiger offense to put up 3 fgs on the napkin stat sheet – Tyler Caldwell added 4 pts in the quarter (what proved to be his final points of the game – all in the first half of action … So Webster brought in Andrew Smith off the bench the junior throw in 2 triples as the Jeeps went 3/5 from downtown in the second …Blevins had 2 putbacks buckets for 12 points in the half (ironically the 4 points in the 2nd qtr were the big man’s last 4 points of the game) … South Webster went into intermission with a 4 points lead South Webster 37 New Boston 34 at the half

turnabout is fair play as NB was able to pressure the Jeeps perimeter shooters – SW went 1/6 from behind the arc as Smith added his 3rd triple in 3 quarters with the only other points coming from Trae Zimmerman’s 2 and 4 points from Tanner Voiers … New Boston got points from role players a big time 3 ball from Marcus Sexton, a quarter ending transition bucket from Jerome McKinley … New Boston 46 South Webster 46 end of 3 … the 4th quarter was as tight as it gets with the Jeeps putting up fgs – 5 points each from Voiers/Smith (each with a deep trey) along with buckets by Zimmerman/Bockway … the Tigers of Coach Cox countered from the line going 13/14 from the line with their only fgs from Saunders/Grady Jackson … 6:04 in the 4th the Jeeps were up 49-47 … NB by the 2:14 on the clock had taken the lead 55-54 … the Jeeps continued to put NB on the FT line – the Tiger to a man were clutch down the stretch … Kyle Sexton was a perfect 6/6 … Jackson 2/2, Saunders 2/2, McKinley 3/4 … :40.1 New Boston 59-56 … :13.1 NB 61-58 … Brayden Voiers took the ball to the hole for two 61-60 Tigers … 2 FTs ended the scoring and the game … New Boston 63 South Webster 60 a final …

… Coach Huffer’s Cavs NEEDED to defend the Hat tonight – and DID ! … holding the Blue Lions of Coach Scott to but 26 points for the game – zero FGs in the 4th period of action ONLY 2 points in the quarter … the quarter breaks looked like this :

Qtr ……1 ….2……3……4

Cavs …..6 …20 …37 ….56
Lions…. 6….12 …24 ….26

… Chillicothe more than defended the home court vs Court House as the Cavs defense shutdown the Blue Lions … an anemic 1st quarter offensively by both teams … each had 4 turnovers in the opening period …Brandon Noel netted 2 fgs /Jayvon Maughmer 2 pts for the Cavs while 3 Blue Lions seniors opened the Blue Lion scoring Evan Upthegrove/Blaise Tayese/Omar Porter each 1 fg/2 points in the quarter … Chillicothe 6 Washington CH 6 end of 1 … in the context of tonight’s game the Cavs “blew open” the game with a 14 points quarter while holding WCH to another 6 points as lefty Chris Postage drained 2 triples from the left wing and sub Christian Benson played quality minutes for Coach Huffer off the bench with a nice drive across the lane for 2 pts (3 in the qtr) … Chillicothe 20 Washington CH 12 at the half … the Blue Lions got back into the game in the first 2 minutes of the 3rd as Omar Porter/Richie Burns connected for 6 points to narrow the margin to 6 points before the Cavs

Alexander 46 a final

… made the trip to the WarriorDome to see if the Alexander Spartans were ready to move into the Elite 8 … my 3rd time to have eyes on the Spartans … a W at Vinton County, a L at Athens and tonight an L vs Warren … the Warriors were very Warren like – disciplined, constant motion offensively, solid defensive game turning the Spartans over 17 times, handled the AHS defensive pressure as Alexander was only able to turn WHS over 6 times for the game … Both teams were effective offensively in the opening quarter as Alexander had all 5 starters dent the scorebook led by Dylan Mecum’s 5 points/JK Kearns a trey (3 pts) and single buckets by Caleb Terry/Kaleb Easley 2 apiece … Warren was paced by senior 2 man Noah NIchols with 9 points in the quarter … Warren 17 Alexander 16 after 1 … period had more defensive pressure by both teams as Warren had 4 turnovers vs Alexanders 3 for the period …AHS’s Mecum was the go to guy as he added 5 more points while Warren’s PG Seth Dennis took over for Nichols as Dennis added 7pts (11 in the first half) … Warren 26 Alexander 23 at intermission … Quarter 3 had the Alexander offense finding

Coach Blane Maddox … 20th Season at Warren Local HS qualifies for the Bob Arnzen Award …

I was at Warren High School Tuesday night to take in Warren vs Alexander HS… as always I had the pleasure to chat with Coach Blane Maddox , he gave me some reading material the “2018 December Hooplines – OHSBCA Newsletter” … basketball information, newsletter for coaches, award winners of the past etc. I’m reading through the magazine, ran across the “Bob Arnzen Award Winners” …

Bob Arnzen was the legendary boys coach for Delphos St John’s High School … he was boys head basketball coach for 43 years … when he retired he was the #2 winningest coach in Ohio High School hoops (676 wins – that now stands as #5 on the all time list) … he was inducted into the Ohio High School Basketball Coach Association Hall of Fame in 1995 ..

… The Bob Arnzen Award is given to those basketball coaches who have devoted 20 consecutive years or more of service to the same school and for their loyalty/commitment to Ohio High School Basketball. I began highlighting the coaches in the SouthEast District who have been presented with the Bob Arnzen Award over the years … as one would expect those I found (24) are among the who’s who of SEO hoops :

Howie Caldwell (Racine Southern)
Jim Darrow (Wellston)
Doug Fisher (Sheridan)
Jim Myers (Logan)
Jim Osborne (Gallia Academy)
Dave Young (North Adams)
John Helber (Logan)
… plus 17 more in the SE District …

Trimble 49 South Gallia 42 a final

Trimble 49
South Gallia 42 a final

… Earlier in the week I decided that I would make a trip to Glouster tonight to see Coach Caldwell’s 10-2 Trimble Tomcats taking on the 11-5 South Gallia Rebels … both D4 schools … I had hoped to have gotten to see the Tomcats at the Beasts of the Southeast the 2nd week of January BUT Mother Nature didn’t allow either myself or the Tomcats to make the trip to Chesapeake … I wasn’t disappointed – good basketball game ! both teams showed how they got to double digit “W’s” on the season ! South Gallia relied on perimeter scoring (8/18 three points/8 fgs in the paint) while Howie’s troops are undersized, not a particularly good perimeter scoring teams (0/8 from behind the arc… only 1 fg made outside the paint for the game !) …the Tomcats are a true “Blue Collar” team … I was driving back from Glouster digesting the game I watched – the Tomcats are a TEAM that Mike Rowe from Dirty Jobs would do a show on ! – 32 minutes of motion offense, picks along the baseline, on the wings, at the

Athens 40 Warren 56 a final

Athens 40
Warren 56 a final

… I made the trip to Warren Local for the first time this season – doesn’t seem right ! I usually have made at least another trip or have seen Coach Maddox’s TEAM before Christmas … the Warriors due to their own non-league affiliation have to schedule teams that WILL schedule THEM … the BBB have had to book games with foreign teams – Spring Valley, Parkersburg & Parkersburg South WVa, East district teams – Meadowbrook , Fort Frye (regulars on the WHS schedule), Whitehall in C’bus … you can see my problem – as much as I want to see the Warriors – I also want to see them playing another SEO District Foe … with that said last night’s match-up would be a good barometer game for Warren vs a SEO quality team … Coach Cozart’s Bulldogs came into the game with an 8-2 record after running off 8 straight W’s … Warren lost it’s opening game in OT to the Marietta Tigers AT Marietta in what has been the Tigers best showing of their season … Athens – an SEO “tall” team with 3 starters at 6-3 & football size “strength” in Eli Chubb, Justin Hynes, Isaiah Butcher … a hardnosed, scrappy guard in Logan Maxfield … and a quick hands/quick feet pg in Elijah Williams … AHS plays their patented 3-2 match-up/trapping zone on the defensive end … Warren entered the game being somewhat

… D4 vs D3 … Blevins vs Holden … the Jeeps vs the ‘Burg … it doesn’t get any better than that … the Burg came into the game undefeated while the Jeeps were “staying afloat” 5-5 … SW’s marquee player in Shiloah Blevins was in his 2nd game back from injury while the burgs Tanner Holden, arguably the best player in SEOhio no matter the division, entered the contest averaging 29 ppg with a 50 point game on his resume’ this season … how could this one NOT be a good game ?

PFLOYD1 made it’s way up Rte 33 to the Lancaster-Dixon Line tonight to take in the battle between the FU Falcons vs the Sheridan Generals … I needed to give the pfloyd “eye test” to both of these Logan D2 Sectional teams as well as having Sheridan in the top 8 teams I wanted to see how the Generals compared to the other top 8 teams in the rankings … besides it’s always good to see old friends from FU – smeltzy, Coach Helber for FU , Ryan Montgomery the FU Athletic Director …
