… This one was over before the first 1:13 was in the books ! – the Generals punched the Big Reds in the mouth jumping out to a 6-0 lead as the SHS BIGS took control offensively – Luken Hill (6-5) 6 points in the opening qtr./ Grant Heileman (6-7) 6 points / and swing man Landen Russell (6-1) 4 points with deuces by Ethan Heller/Adam Boyle … 20 first period points for Sheridan … if the offensive effort wasn’t enough the SHS defense turned the Big Reds over 9 times in the quarter while holding SVHS to 4 points in the period … Sheridan 20 Steubenville 4 end of 1 … Sheridan IS the most complete TEAM in the D2 tournament imo – the BIGS of Heileman/Luken Hill inside BOTH have played outstanding basketball the last 4 games – Luken Hill has taken his inside presence/game to another level … Landen Russell (soph) outstanding D, getting the putback buckets down low/ he’s the scavenger type player who does it all including scoring around the basket and from that 12 feet and in range – playing like a man on a mission … tonight Heileman picked up 2 fouls in the first qtr but the Generals can bring in Adam Boyle at 6-5 who got plenty of PT when G Heileman was injured for 5 games in the regular season … the SHS bench Boyle/Malone/ Nate Johnson – makes them deeper than most teams … PG Costa Coconus doesn’t score much (tonight nothing on the board) but handles the ball well, gets the offense rolling … add to the mix Mr. Everything for SHS Ethan Heller – scores/handles the ball/ gets into the paint/ shoots the perimeter 3 ball … more importantly he IS the “go to ” guy … Sheridan jumped all over Steubenville in the 1st period with only 2 points from Heller … the 2nd quarter was Ethan Heller’s as the SHS dropped 21 points on the Big Red … Heller put up 10 on his ball alone … Landen Russell added 6 more points … off the bench Nate Johnson knocked down a triple and a deuce for 5 points … MORE defense, MORE Big Red turnovers – 8 more to be exact in the 2nd … 17 for the first 2 quarters … SVHS added 11 points in the 2nd while losing ground … the Big Red had 15 points total for the half … 17 turnovers … more turnovers than points ! the SVHS strength was said to be in the paint – FOR THE GAME the Sheridan inside D held Steubenville to only 11 fgs in the paint – 22 points while Sheridan OWNED the paint … scoring 52 points in the paint ! … inside presence at both ends for SHS … turned the Big Reds over 27 times resulting in 35 points off turnovers … total domination by the Sheridan Generals as they waltzed into the Regional Final Saturday … Sheridan 41 Steubenville 15 at intermission ….. … what a great game to watch from the Cheap Seats ! the Tigers go 10/18 from downtown … Berne Union 7/21 from behind the arc … 17 threes between the 2 D4 semi-finalists !!! The Rockets came to play with SIZE, SIZE and more SIZE … great game plan – simple game plan “We’re bigger/stronger … put the ball down low in the hands of the BIGS on the block … go down low to set up the 3 ball – Zane Mirgon (2)/ Levi Ross (2)/Brock Unger (2) /Chaz Dickerson (1) … so many offensive boards for the Rockets … BU seemed to be able to do anything/everything they wanted – on the blocks, perimeter scoring WITH the bigs , controlling the boards … turning the Tigers over (5 TOs in the first period) … BU put a 25 spot on the scoreboard in the 1st period ! Zane Mirgon (10pts) / Brock Unger (6pts on a pair of treys)/ Chaz Dickerson (3pts on a triple) / Baron Sullivan (4 pts) & Chase Blevins (2pts) … outstanding all around quarter by the Rockets … the Tigers were led by Marcus Saunders 7pts and 3 pointers by Saunders/Jerome McKinley & Grady Jackson … Berne Union 25 New Boston 15 after one … in the 2nd New Boston found the range from behind the 3 point line trading 2 pointers by the Rockets for 3 balls for the first 6:18 of the 2nd outscoring BU 14-8 to pull to within 4 pts 29-33 BU with 1:42 on the clock … in the final 1:42 the Tigers broke lose on a 12-0 run led by guard Malachi Potts’ 8 points including a 3 point bankshot from 30 ft as the buzzer sounded ! when the dust had cleared the Tigers of Coach Cox had drained 6/9 triples in the 2nd quarter … 9/15 in the first half … what had been a BU 8 point lead with 3 minutes to play in the 2nd quarter ended with NB having one upped the BU 25 point quarter putting 26 points on the board in the 2nd taking an 8 point lead of their own into half time … New Boston 41 Berne Union 33 at intermission … the last 3 minutes of the 2nd quarter might have broken many opponents … BU however brought out the D – turning the Tigers over 5 times in the 3rd … while adding 3 treys of their own in the quarter (2 by Levi Ross) and another by Mirgon (his 2nd of the game) … the big man in the middle Jacob Harmon controlled the paint with 2 putback buckets … NB seemed to try to shorten the game, running more clock with each possession … putting the ball in the hands of Sexton/Caldwell out on the perimeter – resulting in 5 NB TOs and a BU transition bucket … what was Tiger momentum going into halftime … the Rockets took away in the 3rd as BU inched closer … New Boston 54 Berne Union 49 after 3 – game on … at 6:38 in the 4th NB led 57-49 on a Tyler Caldwell old fashioned bucket & 1 in the paint … by 3:13 BU had cut the lead to 55-61 mainly from the FT line with the clock stopped – BU went 7/8 from the line in the 4th … on the other end BU put the Tigers on the line … NB made it interesting down the stretch as they hit only 7/14 from the line in the 4th … at 1:03 NB led 63-60 – a one possession game … FT’s by Jacob Harmon made the score 63-62 NB with :48 to play … Tyler Caldwell knocked down 2 FTs :43.3 NB 65-62 … Caldwell to the line again hits 2 of 2 to give the Tigers a 2 possession lead 67-62 … BU’s McCartney on an uncontested drive the length of the court NB up 67-64 with :16 to play on the clock …Kyle Sexton 1/2 from the line with :12 on the clock … 68-64 Tigers … a BU turnover … Jerome McKinley sealed the Tigers win with 1 for 2 from the line to end the scoring … New Boston 69 Berne Union 64 a final …

Zane Trace 51 a final … Tough matchup for FU in that they DID match up size wise – with length but as I posted in the pregame it WAS the finesse of FU vs the physicality of ZT … in the end it came down to the Falcons having an offense that sets up with the perimeter game … when FU got the ball down low – “down low” was from the blocks up/out while Zane Trace has an offense that sets up in the paint/ getting the ball “down low” – where “down low” was BELOW the blocks … big difference … the Falcons were 3/13 through the first 3 quarters before launching 10 treys in the 4th (4/10) … ZT with the 3 ball not being THE priority went 3/6 from the perimeter … the Falcons had the lead in the 1st period on an Evan Conley triple to open the scoring … ZT forged the tie at 5-5 with a Nick Nesser medium range jumper and Cam Evans transition bucket … FU took leads of 8-7 and 10-9 behind a 2nd triple by Conley, a drive and left handed scoop layup at the rim by Ryan Magill and a bucket on the block by Houston Harrah … the 10-9 lead was the last lead of the game for the Falcons as Cam Evans knocked down his favorite shot a pull up mid range jumper to end the scoring in the 1st … Zane Trace 11 Fairfield Union 10 after 1 … the 2nd quarter the Pioneers went to it’s strength in the paint as Colby Swain/Nick Nesser/ Triton Davidson each added a bucket down low on the blocks … Cam Evans did what Cam Evans does best – take the ball into the paint – it’s either points on fgs or the 6-0 jr guard goes to the line … in the 2nd Evans went to the line … 2/2 … defensively ZT held FU to 2 fgs Conley/Harrah one each in the paint with the FU pg Conley adding 2/2 from the charity stripe … Zane Trace 22 Fairfield Union 16 at intermission … one thing you can count on with a Coach Eversole/Coach Goodyear coached team is that adjustments are made … with FU going 2/11 from downtown in the first 2 quarters the Falcons come out looking to get better looks … FU took only 3 treys in the 3rd … with sophomore Ryan Magill dropping a deep one to draw FU to 20-22 before Evans hit another midrange jumper for a ZT 24-20 lead/ Huston Harrah with a drive to the hole for 2 … 22-24 ZT … Evan Conley went to the FT line for 2 dropped them both 24-24 … where do you go when you need points – look for #10 Cam Evans the junior guard came thru as he added 6 points in the period and Triton Davidson a deuce … FU would not go away as Chase Poston got his first fgs on back to back transition buckets (5 pts in the period) … Zane Trace 33 Fairfield Union 30 after 3 … the final quarter opened with Cam Evans on a mid range jumper 35-30 ZT … Evan Conley drilled a trey 33-35 ZT … that was as close as FU could get the rest of the way … FU picked up 4 treys in the 4th on 10 attempts (2 Conley/1 each Poston and Harrah) … drawing within 4 at 40-44 with :43.2 on the game clock … ZT went 12/14 from the FT line in the final period … Cam Evans with the ball in his hands went 7/9 in the 4th as the sr guard wanted the ball down the stretch … Zane Trace 51 Faifield Union 45 a final …Pfloyd’s Official “un-official” Napkin Stats – Fairfield Union

… entering the final game of district play at the Convo the Sheridan Generals , the #1 seed out of the Logan D2 Sectional, could only be viewed for what they are – one of the complete teams in the SE District : a floor general in Ethan Heller G/PG , PG Costa Coconus, size in the paint Luken Hill (6-5)/Grant Heileman (6-7) … a swing man in Landen Russell (6-1) who is strong in the paint, a solid defender on the perimeter/rebounder … off the bench MORE size in 6-5 Adam Boyle /6-3 Ethan Malone/6-2 Nate Johnson … not many teams in any of the division can match that mix on TEAM … ALL quality TEAMs that expect to go deep in the post season MUST have “THAT” player – their “go to” guy, a player who can “go get” points, who is calm under pressure/who answers the oppositions run with a big bucket on the perimeter, in the paint, at the FT line … yeah the Generals have one of those players – Ethan Heller …

… the Ironmen of Coach Morrow came to play ! opened the game going 5/5 from behind the arc vs the Sheridan 3/2 zone – Caleb Wallis with 1/ Nevan Yates 2/Cooper Donaldson 2 … while Sheridan went where we in the Cheap Seats figured they would go – to the bigs in the paint … in the 1st quarter it was 6-5 jr. F Luken Hill taking the ball to the rim for 7 points to keep the Generals above water with the JHS perimeter assault … Heller added 5 points on a trey and pair of FTs … Jackson 19 Sheridan 12 end of 1 … adjustments … basketball IS a game of adjustment – the JHS perimeter shooting took SHS out of their zone … the Generals went man to man in the 2nd … the Ironmen picked up an early transition bucket by Cooper Donaldson to put JSH up 21-12 … the Ironmen never scored again in the quarter … 0/5 from beyond the arc, didn’t get to the line … the Generals went on a 10-0 run to finish the 2nd … 5 more points for Heller (three ball #2) … Luken Hill/Branden Russell each picking up put back buckets in the paint … Sheridan 22 Jackson 21 at the half …

Both young TEAM with the Chesapeake Panthers being “the younger” of the 2 … Adena starts 2 seniors …plays 5 sophomores … Chesapeake has zero seniors on the TEAM … starts 2 juniors plays 3 jrs/4 sophs and a freshman … the district final started as one might expect both teams a case of the nerves – in this situation a team will look to the senior leadership to settle things down – Adena with the only seniors on the court – followed suit as seniors Zach Fout and Caleb Fogelsong led AHS in the opening period to an early advantage on the scoreboard – Fout opening the scoring with a triple and a deuce to calm the nerves of the Blue & White … Caleb Fogelsong pushed the score out to 10-2 Adena with a couple of 2 pointers … with no senior leadership to look to it came down to the freshmen PG Levi Blankenship to get the Panthers off the snide with back to back transition buckets … help from CHS’s Eli Archer (4 points) kept the Panthers in the game early …both teams turned their opponent over in the opening quarter Adena 4 TOs/peake 5 … 12 Chesapeake 8 after 1 … each team traded baskets in the 2nd with Adena being led by their sophomores – Logan Bennett 4 points/Nate Throckmorton 2 pts/ off the bench Jacob Shipley added a triple to break an 18-18 tie … the Adena size showed in the 2nd as Logan Bennett and Caleb Fogelsong both added putback buckets in the paint for AHS with Bennett’s 2 PBB’s coming in the last minute of action to push the Warriors to a 5 point half time lead … Chesapeake had their only 2 ties of the game in the 2nd period 16-16 and 18-18 … CHS never had the lead all night … Adena 25 Chesapeake 20 intermission … Coach Davis’ troop were doing what they needed to do to be IN this one – they controlled the tempo … in the 3rd period they also did what else they needed to do – they turned Adena over – 7 TOs in the 3rd … Adena opened the 3rd as it had ended the first half with soph Logan Bennett getting in the paint for 2 pts extending the lead to 7 pts ( 27 -20 AHS) … enter freshmen PG Levi Blankenship & jr Tylan Hutchison to once again on the perimeter picking the pockets of the Adena guards for back to back transition baskets to go with 2 Blankenship FTs … the duo drew the score to a 1 point deficit … Adena 27 the peake 26 … a Zach Fout (sr) triple pushed the lead to 30-26 … the 3rd ended with a trey by Blankenship to draw CHS to within two … Adena 35 Chesapeake 33 after 3 … a common thread throughout the first 3 quarters was the Peake’s inability to make their FTs … thru 3 the Panthers were 6/11 from the line … a drive by Tylan Hutchison baseline for 2 was the final tie of the game 35-35 … as Adena closed out the game on an 18-5 run … going 12/17 from the FT line needing to make but 3 fgs in the final period … for the peake 3 fgs – one each by Austin Jackson/Tylan Hutchison/Levi Blankenship the rest of the peake’s points were from the line – 7 total points in the 4th for CHS … the key napkin stats for CHS were 5 TOs/ 1/6 from the FT line / 3 Panthers fouling out … Adena 53 Chesapeake 40 a final …

It is just THAT time again – the yearly CT scans/blood draws/oncologist appointment at OSU – The James … good thing there is Basketball :30 going on – I have been able to push my appointments on Monday to the “way back of my mind” … got the reminder phone call from OSU/The James this evening – it got real … again …

I’ve posted before I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Melanoma in October of 2010 … I had 4 years of intense treatments trying to stop the metastasis of the cancer – I’ve had my lungs resected , lymph nodes removed, nodules removed from my liver & lungs … my final big surgery was 2 summers ago removing a foot of cancerous intestine …

… the D4 district games have by far been the most entertaining thus far – excellent basketball game between 2 teams who will be back next season for a possible “do over” rematch in D4 district play … BOTH TEAMS are young, New Boston losing 6-7 senior swing/post player Tyler Caldwell … Coach Howie Caldwell’s Tomcats return their top 7 players … good stuff …

… Both TEAMS big men in the middle led their respective teams in the opening quarter of action … for the Tomcats 6-0 Big Man freshman Blake Guffey got it done down low for 11 points while New Boston’s BIG Kyle Sexton matched the tally of 11 first quarter points mainly from outside the paint – Sexton went 3/3 from behind the arc in the 1st … both teams turned their opponent over in the opening period – NB with 6 turnovers/Trimble 4 … Trimble 15 New Boston 13 after 1 … in the 2nd NB increased the pressure going to their man to man D – forcing 5 Tomcat miscues while taking better care of the ball only 1 TO for the Tigers in the 2nd … scoring for THS was spread among the masses – Jeremiah Brown with 5 pts/Cameron Kittle 5 pts … both with a trey … Trimble went 2/3 from three point land … the Tigers got their role players involved as freshman guard Grady Jackson picked up a 3 ball/ freshmen PG Jerome McKinley added 4 points, Sexton picked up 4 points all from the FT stripe … 6-7 Caldwell added a deuce … both teams matched their opening quarter scoring numbers New Boston 26 Trimble 30 at intermission … through 2 quarters the Tigers were geared to stopping the Tomcat floor leader Brayden Weber – only 2 FTs after a half of action … the 3rd was not much better for Weber as the quick lefty was only able to put up 1 fg /4 points for the game … with Weber being hounded by Jerome McKinley , Blake Guffey picked up the slack offensively adding 7 points in the 3rd with 2 points each by Sawyer Koons & the Weber 2 … New Boston defensively showed a 1-3 zone with Mckinley going man on Weber … the D held THS to 11 third quarter points while NB was able to add 18 to the scoreboard – 5 Tigers contributed on the offensive end … Grady Jackson 5 pts/Marcus Saunders 4 pts/Jerome McKinley 4pts/ Sexton with 2 and a triple by Tyler Caldwell … the Tigers were chasers for most of the first 3 periods finally catching THS for the first time 33-33 with 5:34 in the 3rd … then 36-36 with 3:51 on the clock … NB closed out the 3rd topping out an 8-5 Tigers run to finish the 3rd … New Boston 44 Trimble 41 after 3 … the final quarter was all Tigers – defensively Caldwell blocking multiple shots down low , while the 6-7 swing man got into the paint for 7 points to pace the Tigers on a 20-12 run in the 4th … led by the defense – Jerome McKinley got NB the separation they needed on back to back transition buckets to push NB out to a 48-41 lead with 6:56 to play … the Tigers never gave up the lead … leading 55-46 with 4:07 to play … stretching the lead to 13 points 59-46 at 2:29 … 61-46 with 1:51 to play Tigers … Trimble got 6 pts from Blake Guffey in the 4th and a couple of 3’s from Brayden Weber – too little too late as Marcus Saunders for NB added 6 pts (4/4 from the line) and 3 from Sexton to seal the deal and the Tiger’s appearance in regional play for the first time in 60 years … New Boston 64 Trimble 53 a final …

fter watching a couple of excellent games in the D4 District Finals Thursday night , I’m looking for MORE good hoops action today Saturday 3/9 with the D3’s taking the court !!! I’m dressed ! My Napkin Stat sheets are filled out ! Got my Beasts of the SouthEast pullover on … pencils, twizzlers, cough drops, PASS … I’m pacing … reading/rereading old threads, memorized the D3 District Program LOL … talk about anxious !!! I don’t even have a “horse in the race”!!! …

Game #2 in D4 District action started out with a blitz by Coach Howie Caldwell’s Trimble Tomcats … 24 points for THS led by junior Brayden Weber’s 11 points … Weber matched the Peeble’s offensive output for the quarter … Jeremiah Brown added 1 of the Trimble opening quarter 3 triples (5 pts) … Cameron Kittle 6pts including a trey, Blake Guffey 2pts … the Trimble blitz was initiated by turning the Indians over 5 times in the period leading to 4 transition baskets the final 2 in a row by Weber to finish out the quarter … Peebles went 2/4 from downtown Dawson Mills/Alex Camp with the triples … Kyle Lightner had 4 points for Coach Arey’s Peebles team… the Indians sporting ALL underclassmen – no seniors … Peebles 11 Trimble 24 after 1 … the 2nd quarter saw both teams exchange baskets with the Indians finding offensive help from sophomore Oakley Burba, the soph swing man dropped 2 three pointers in the 2nd totaling 10 points for PHS … Trimble countered with 4 pts from Weber/4 points from Conner Wright / 2 from Kittle and Blake Guffey to finish out the quarter … Trimble 36 Peebles 24 at intermission … through 2 quarters the undersized Tomcats held their own on the boards and on the scoreboard … the 3rd period saw PHS turn up the D – holding THS to only 2 fgs in the 3rd period – a deuce from Weber , a trey & 2 FTs from Jeremiah Brown was all Trimble could muster … Peebles with the increased defensive pressure turned the Tomcats over 5 times … found offense in Westin Browning’s 7 points and 2 points each by Gage Crothers/Kyle Lightner/Dawson Mills … Trimble 43 Peebles 37 after 3 … the key to the Indians creep back in to the game happened midway in the 2nd quarter as Coach Arey went from a man to man D to zone … the score was 32-16 in favor of Trimble when the adjustment was made … after the 3rd Peebles had outscored Trimble 21-11 … Trimble continued to struggle offensively in the 4th putting only 8 more points on the board led by Blake Guffey’s 5 points … Peebles continued to find points from the perimeter as Dawson Mills connected on 2 triples in the 4th 4 pts each by Lightner/Crothers … at 3:40 in the 4th THS held onto a 50-47 lead … at :46.6 on the clock 51-49 Trimble … Peebles outscored Trimble after going to a zone 35-19 to close out regulation … Trimble 51 Peebles 51 end of regulation… OT had Trimble get a transition bucket from Blake Guffey 53-51 Tomcats … Coach Caldwell put the game “on the line” – the FT line with Brayden Weber scoring the final 4 points from the foul line … :21.3 Trimble up 56-53 … :12.9 56-55 THS … a Weber 1/2 FT making the score 57-55 with :04.1 to play … a long trey off the front rim … Trimble 57 Peebles 55 OT final …
