Jackson 67
Minford 57 a final

… Monday night hoops ! #21 Minford (5-2) @ #5 Jackson (7-2) … Jackson with its’ 3rd game in 4 days (b2b with Unioto & Wheelersburg) … Minford having not had a game since 12/20 … the Ironmen looked sluggish out of the gates while the Falcons looked like they had been off for 10 days which equaled 2 pretty even teams in the 1st quarter … Coach Morrow’s Ironmen went 3/7 from behind the arc while Coach Shoemaker’s Falcon’s 2/4 from downtown … JHS with 1 TO/MHS 6 TOs … Jackson was led by Boston Kuhn’s 7 points (2 treys), Drew Bragg added a triple, Braxton Hammond with 4 pts for the Ironmen … Minford was led by Nathan McCormick’s 5 pts/ triples from Elijah Vogelsong-Lewis & Skylar Knore (3 pts each) and deuce from Trent Zimmerman …

Jackson 16 Minford 13 end of 1 … … the best player on the court – PG Caleb Wallis for JHS – spent the 1st quarter penetrating, dishing, finding teammates, working hard to get everyone involved … What do you do if you are the leader on the TEAM and your TEAM seems a step or two slow? CW took matters into his own hands by turning up the D, pushing the ball in transition … with Wallis “pulling” the JHS TEAM in the right direction JHS scored the first 8 points of the 2nd qtr not allowing an MHS point until the 5:23 mark …TO Minford … the 8-3 run to open the qtr. was followed by a Jackson 10-0 run … an 18 point Jackson lead at the 2:45 mark of the period … Caleb Wallis led the way with 15 points in the quarter – 2 triples /5 for 5 from the FT line/ 2 transition buckets … the rout was on , right ? – nope – as the Falcons showed their stuff from beyond the arc in the final 2:45 on the clock the Falcons went on their own 11-2 run to close out the quarter led by Trent Zimmerman’s back to back treys along with a triple from Vogelson-Lewis …

Jackson 36 Minford 27 at the half… the 3rd period had Minford holding their own … outscoring Jackson 12-10 in the quarter going 1/6 from behind the three point line but getting quality minutes & 5 points from Nathan McCormick along with 4 bench points (2 each from Zimmerman and Adam Crank) … Jackson had Boston Kuhn tallying 5 points (a trey & 2 FTs) and 2 two pointers from Wallis …

Jackson 46 Minford 39 end of 3 … the final quarter was played fairly even with Jackson doing it’s damage from behind the arc and as the quarter wound down – from the FT line … Minford didn’t fold and go away in the face of 21 points in the quarter from the Ironmen … the Falcons ARE an excellent 3 point shooting TEAM as MHS drained 5 triples in the final period – 3 by McCormick (11 points in the quarter on his ball alone) with support from Vogelsong-Lewis & Andy Crank with 1 trey each in the period … in the end it was Jackson’s Defense (forcing 19 MHS turnovers in the game) and a heavy dose of Caleb Wallis – 7/7 from the FT line in the 4th … 28 points for the game – that was the difference in this one …

… Minford is an excellent shooting team – 5 different players had made three pointers … when Wallis for Jackson led the charge defensively it took the Falcons 5-6 minutes to get a feel for the JHS pressure on the perimeter … with their ability to trade 2 pointers for 3 pointers they have the ability to stay in most games while the fire power to knockoff front runners … Coach Shoemaker has put together a quality TEAM …

… Coach Morrow’s Ironmen are fun to watch, they get after an opponent defensively especially on the perimeter, lots of help defense … good communication … the motor at both ends in Caleb Wallis – not a surprise … but lots excellent pieces to this Ironman squad – Caden Donaldson is outstanding on the defensive end helping down low , keeping the opposition bigs from getting shots in the paint … Donaldson & Co. in the paint match the perimeter pressure led by Wallis/Kuhn/Brown … off the bench – Bragg/Erwin/Spires get it done defensively with Bragg adding nice minutes and an outside 3 point threat as well that has to be respected by opponents … 8 deep … Caleb Wallis IS the best point guard Below the Lancaster-Dixon Line … Jackson solidifies itself as one of the best defensive TEAMs in SEO …

… got a chance to chat briefly with Dan Morrow of Jackson Radio fame and the Dad of Coach Morrow for Jackson – we both agreed that the Ironmen NEEDED a W tonight after coming off of a weekend b2b with 2 solid teams in beating Unioto Friday night and losing by 2 to Wheelersburg on Saturday … met Caden & Cooper Donaldson’s parents as my wife and I walked into the school tonight – thanks Mr. D for introducing yourself! you should be very proud of your boys! Caden being one of the best role players in SEO while tonight Cooper Donaldson was honored for scoring over 1000 points in his high school for the Ironmen – Cooper was recognized and will have his name added to the 1000 point plus banner in the gym … just as last season’s 17-8 District squad was honored as well with a banner to be displayed in the gym … great stuff ! always makes me smile no matter where I go to watch hoops in SEO to see the players honored for their contributions on the court for the schools they are playing for …

… I looked at this one as my #1 (Chillicothe) vs #3 (Jackson) … I also looked at HOW the teams I rank got to where they are ranked – defense … BOTH of these TEAMS fit the bill – Chillicothe averages giving up 46 ppg while the Ironmen are at 43 ppg THAT wins basketball games …THAT makes you an Elite 8 TEAM … to go WITH the D , a team must be able to put points on the board as well … Coach Huffer’s Cavs are at 72 ppg while Coach Morrow’s Ironmen put up 64 ppg offensively BOTH offensive point totals are good for hs hoops – a closer look at the point totals offensively tells you that Jackson has 1 consistent scorer in double digits PG Caleb Wallis … Chillcothe sports 3 consistent double digit scorers in Brandon Noel, Jayvon Maughmer and Tre Beard …

Jackson HAS more scorers than just CW for sure – Griffin Brown, Braxton Hammond, Drew Bragg & Co. BUT their points on a nightly basis is dictated by the opponents defense … while the Cavs can count on the Big 3 every night to GET THEIRS … last night was a case of the BIG 3 plus 1 getting theirs while the Jackson D couldn’t keep the BIG 3 from getting theirs … for the Ironmen to get THIS win a couple of the BIG 3 had to be “less than” their usual nightly output while CW had to get HIS and others needed to get MORE than their usual or at least their usual plus having a role player step up …

… from the cheap seats we got the defense from both teams that we expected in the first 2 quarters …

Quarter #1:

Jackson : 2/4 from 3 point land … Chillicothe 2/4
Jackson: 2 TOs … Chillicothe 3 TOs
Jackson: led by Wallis’s 7 points … Chillicothe led by the Cavs “plus 1” Vincent Roper 7 pts
Jackson: 2 scorers … Chillicothe 3

Jackson 10 / Chillicothe 12 after 1

Quarter #2 :

Jackson: 1/3 triples … Chillicothe 1/3
Jackson: 3 TOs ….. Chillicothe 4 TOs
Jackson: led by Hammond’s 4 points …. Chillicothe got the BIG 3 on the board Tre Beard 9 pts/ Noel 4 /Maughmer 2
Jackson; 4 scorers …. Chillicothe 4 scorers

Chillicothe defensively held Caleb Wallis to 2 points in the 2nd (Roper) … Chillicother in got their scoring from the BIG 3 which is what THEY need to get W’s THEY have to get theirs …

Jackson 21 / Chillicothe 29 after 2 … the 8 point spread that never seemed to go away …

… the 2nd half of play had Chillicothe keeping an 8-12 point differential on the score board … both teams played solid defense, both teams showed their quickness with help down low … both teams matched each other where it counted on the scoreboard – Jackson putting up 14 points to Chillicothe’s 16 … Jackson 35 Chillicothe 45 after 3 … trading buckets in a game like this eventually brings the ultimate winner into play – the clock … if you can’t put up “kills” (stopping an opponent 3 straight times without them putting up points) odds are you aren’t closing the gap on the board … the Ironmen put up buckets but the size in Noel/Maughmer in the paint were the difference in the 4th as duo put up 12 points in the 4th which led to JHS having to foul down the stretch to try to find “stops/misses” … didn’t happen as Chilli went 11/13 in the 4th period from the FT line in the closing minutes … Jackson 52 Chillicothe 66 a final …

… Jackson is still an Elite 8 team … outstanding energy from starters through role players off the bench – outstanding defensively … consistency from the players surrounding Caleb Wallis in the scoring column is needed to beat the best teams Below the Lancaster-Dixon Line … I like Griffin Brown (3 triples) … the Ironmen need more from Bragg and Spires to add to what Hammond brings to the stat sheet offensively … Unioto will bring the same defensive energy as the Ironmen – should be a dandy … follow that one up with Wheelersburg and Minford in the next 3 days … what a great stretch of games to see where a team stands at both ends of the floor … best of luck to the Ironmen …

… the Cavs gave a D1 powerehouse Cincinnati Moeller everything they wanted for a half of action Friday night … the Cavs shooting 56% from the floor for the game but playing a team in Moeller who shot 76% from the floor FOR THE GAME – didn’t miss a shot in the 3rd quarter … a Cavs TEAM who has SEEN the best, played VS the best … safe to say they are tested … Chillicothe has the components for being an outstanding TEAM – TEAM defense, multiple player scoring, size , 3 point shooting from multiple players , a true PG who happens to also be a double digit scorer, a 6-5 player who plays from outside in, a 6-6 BIG who can go inside outside … what do the Cavs lack or need improvement in ? from the cheap seats – more depth, missing a physical banger IN the paint – an enforcer … D1 demands it … are the Cavs #1 Below the Lancaster-Dixon Line ? absolutely BUT they will be pushed – Zane Trace, Jackson in game 2, the U , FU add in games outside of SEO Upper Arlington, St Charles, Canal to name a few …

… My first “eyes on” either the Cavs or Warriors – Coach Huffer’s boyz are my #1 for a reason – they will put the 2 best players on the court whenever they play a team from Southeast Ohio this season – Brandon Noel/Jayvon Maughmer … the duo combined for 38 points without playing out the 4th period … Adena is a well coached/balanced offensive team – as different players scored just not nearly enough … tough to be in the game with the Cavs while you turn the ball over 24 times which the Cavs quickly turned into 24 points in the transition game … the closest thing to this one being “a game” was the first quarter which the Cavs led at the end 13-11 but as I look at the napkin stats the first qtr. had the “script” for the rest of the game – with the CAVS simply turning the “volume” up to Spinal Tap Volume at 11 : the Cavs turned Adena over 5 times in the quarter/ Cavs “D” was in the pockets of the Warrior players – cue up Vincent Roper/Kamron Smith / Brandon Noel 4 points on the blocks (6 in the quarter) / Cavs had 2 buckets off of steals in transition … Adena stayed within 2 by knocking down 2 triples (Cade McKee/Brandon Smith each 1 trey in the quarter) … going into the 2nd period Adena continued to play a balanced game – knocking down 2 triples (Logan Bennett/Preston Sykes) a couple 2 point buckets from Dillon McDonald enter the Cavalier “D” – CHS forced 6 more turnovers 4 transition buckets …Adena put up 13 points in the period but Brandon Noel 11 points on his ball for the quarter to match the Warriors O … add in 4 points each from Smith/Roper both in transition/fastbreak offensive plays …

Cavs 36 Adena 24 at intermission … a side bar … with the quickness on D that the Cavs have at ALL positions the Cavs seemed to be in front by 2-3 possessions 4-6 points … the D turns a team over a couple trips down … you look at the board and CHS is now up 12-15 points – excellent D that puts a lot of pressure on the perimeter – Roper/Smith/Maughmer/Noel/Beard – you can’t relax on any of them or the ball is going the other way … the 3rd saw more of the same only we saw MORE of the same 5 AHS turnovers , the Cavs D shut down Adena for the first 2 minutes before the Warriors scored in the 3rd in the meantime Jayvon Maughmer made his presence felt as he added an open court transition slam as part of a Cavs 9-0 run in that 2 minute segment… 5 Cavs buckets in transition for the quarter/ 2 Maughmer transition dunks …Chilli outscored Adena 20-8 in the quarter game set and match as the Warriors would not reach the 56 total at the end of 3 by the Cavs … Cavs 56 Adena 32 after 3 … for good measure Coach Huffer put in subs midway through the 4th … Joel Barnes knocked down 2 treys/ Eli Taylor added 2 triples of his own both hitting for 8 points each in the 4th off the bench … for the Warriors Logan Bennett (8 pts in the quarter) and Preston Sykes (1 three ball in the final period) closed out the scoring for AHS …

… 78 points in a game some would describe as “not a clean” game by the Cavs … “in your hip pocket D” … when Noel gets the ball on the blocks – it’s 2 ( so much improved over last season imo – his footwork outstanding, gets his body squared to the hoop/very few off-balance shots) … Noel plays the entire floor – offensively and defensively – a BIG with ALL of the intangibles that make him a “next level” player … Roper last season was not a factor offensively – this season he’s a double-digit scorer (he gets to the rim AND more importantly he creates offense from his D – he’s a keeper) … AND I haven’t even said anything about Tre Beard and Jayvon Maughmer !!! – both are as we already know outstanding at both ends – Maughmer is a long 6-5 …his length gets his hands on the ball defensively – steals/tipped passes – and he finishes at the rim … Tre B IS now 5-9, 5-10 ! he is a deadly spot-up shooter from the perimeter ( picked up 2 player control fouls that sat him the biggest part of the first and part of the 2nd quarters) … the Cavs ARE my #1 … a BIG matchup for the Cavs will be 12/28 vs Zane Trace … a must see game in SEOhio for sure …

… the ONLY question to be answered in this one was going to be – How would LE handle the size of WCH ? size WILL BE a problem for LE BUT not last night at the ZT Classic … 13 three’s is a great equalizer to close any size differential LOL … the Braves of Coaches Stiverson & Coach Holbert started the contest 5/8 from downtown to open the game – 4 different players with a trey apiece (Wietelmann 2 triples/ Ward 1/Sailor 1/ Chalfin 1 ) while the Lions of Coach Scott could muster what their size gave them inside 3 fgs in the paint … the LE defense forced 4 Lions’ TOs in the opening stanza … Logan Elm 18 WCH 6 after 1 … LE cooled off in the 2nd quarter hitting only 3 treys while turning up their D holding WCH to 1 fg in the quarter … Luke Baldwin added a 3 pointer to give LE 5 different 3 point scorers in the first half … Logan Elm 34 WCH 12 at intermission … the 3rd quarter showed a WCH which was able to get inside, use their size getting 3 putback buckets … defensively? WHC continued to be unable to come up with an answer for the LE perimeter scoring as LE added 2 more triples, with the perimeter game working the Braves were then able bring the bigs out which opened the lanes to the rim – advantage Braves … LE put up 17 more points in the 3rd vs WCH 10 … Logan Elm 51 WCH 22 after 3 … Logan Elm played everyone in the 4th quarter – Coach Holbert’s son Tanner (fr) scored his first varsity points banking in a triple from the top of the key as we saw Holbert/Trace Smith/Xavier Kellough all drain triples for LE in the 4th period … ALL Braves/All night … Logan Elm 64 Washington CH 30 a final
