… every game on paper yesterday looked to be a great game for the fans BUT when you take a closer look at the “matchups” THAT is where the games are decided … Peebles has gotten better and better every time out, they started the season as a deep team which can play 9-10 each game, Coach Arey is as good as any in developing TEAM at both ends of the floor – I told Coach Arey after the game last night that I from the Cheap Seats saw an improved Peebles TEAM even from last weekends win vs New Boston … the Indians vs NB played an almost flawless first quarter/part of the 2nd to take what looked like control over the Tigers in that only to have NB battle back to within 1 point … yesterday vs Trimble the Indians looked to have taken last weeks experience and played UP a notch … Peebles seemed to get everyone going in the first quarter – totaling 18 points led by Hunter Ruckel’s 7 / Westin Browning 4, a triple from Oakly Burba, and deuce each from Gage Crothers/Alex Camp … the admitted size advantage was in favor of Peebles …

the Indians held the Tomcats to 8 points in the quarter – Blake Guffey with 4 … Peebles 18 Trimble 8 end of 1 … the 2nd quarter was played fairly even as Trimble got some triples to fall – 1 each by Brayden Weber/Kyle Kennedy/Blake Guffey … Peebles used their size to get into the paint for 8 fgs in box in the quarter from TEAM – Ruckel 4 pts(11 for the half)/ Alex Camp 4 more/Easton Wesley 4 points / PG Weston Browning 2/Kyle Lightner 2 … Peebles 35 Trimble 23 at the half … Coach Arey has always made outstanding adjustments at the half , vs Trimble no different , the Indians came out after the half, turned up the D, turned Trimble over 5 times putting up 25 points in the quarter while holding THS to just 9 points … Peebles had effectively taken away what Trimble likes/wants to do – get into the paint/get to the rim … Trimble CAN shoot the 3 ball, they can’t live by the 3 … when I watched Trimble vs Fed Hock the Tomcats got the ball into the paint for 24 fgs vs Peebles the Trimble was only able to put up 14 fgs in the paint … Peebles 60 Trimble 32 after 3 … if you know anything about Trimble sports it’s that their is NO quit in their coach – Howie Caldwell or the kids no matter the sport at Trimble … unlike what I saw in a later game, these kids never quit, they had been bloodied but never threw in the towel … as Trimble won the final quarter 18-9 … guarded the ball right up to the final buzzer down 29 points … Peebles 69 Trimble 50 a final …

.. I hadn’t seen Eastern Brown yet this season BUT I know of Coach Beucler’s TEAMS – fundamentally sound teams, excellent defensive teams AND this season based on the scores from games the Warriors have been lighting up the scoreboard … based on this one it hasn’t been from the 3 point line, based on this one at the Beasts of the Southeast a big part of the EB offense has been their ability to get it done in the paint, on the boards, scoring in the paint …

What happens when the opponent – Alexander – controls the “air space” above the paint ? you trail at intermission by 18 points and end up losing by 14 points Alexander 57 Eastern Brown 43 a final … playing in this type of midseason get-together of teams from various leagues all across the SouthEast District – I don’t know how much a team scouts their opponent … one of the first things when facing Alexander is that fact that they have a “BIG” man in the middle in 6:10

Caleb Terry AND they have a couple of the best perimeter shooters in

 

JK Kearns and Kyler D’Augustino … what should have turned up on video definitely turned up in the 1st 16 minutes of action Saturday in this one … Alexander controlled the “air space above the paint” Terry had 7 blocks – 2 on EBs first possession – here’s your sign (of things to come the rest of the game) the Spartans went 4/4 from behind the three point line in the first quarter … Alexander 20 Eastern Brown 8 after one … in the 2nd quarter EB held Alexander to only 4 fgs – they happened to be ALL treys 4/5 from downtown in the quarter … 8/9 on their 3 balls for the half while EB had only one player score in the 2nd 6 points by Titus Burns … Alexander 32 Eastern Brown 14 at intermission … Coach Beucler is noted for making excellent adjustments during halftime and during the game … EB outscored AHS 29-25 in the final 16 minutes of action but the damage was done in the first half … EB defensively held the Spartans to only 11 points from the field on 5 field goals in the 2nd half … Alexander took the air out of the ball for almost the entire 2nd half … Kearns did a good job with the ball along with D’Augustino and getting it to Terry in the high post when “holding the ball” not much EB could do but foul – as they did – in the final period (Alex took 22 FTs in the 4th converting on 12) … EB got the offense going with the medium range and perimeter jumpers in the 2nd half – just not enough possessions to be had … anytime one of the big parts of your offense is taken away – the inside game in the paint – you’re going to struggle to put points up … Alexander 57 Eastern Brown 43 a final …

This one was imo the weakest game of the day NOT due to the opponents BUT the fact that Coal Grove entered this one with 4 of their first 7 players injured … EVEN with MY little mind if you play a Coach Persin TEAM you better come with ALL of your weapons, Coach Vanderhoof simply didn’t have the arsenal available to go against a very good Oak Hill TEAM … it didn’t mean the Coach ‘hoof’s troops were phoning it in – the played hard but with some players having very little varsity experience …

CG was led by senior

Evan Gannon’s 17 points for the game (15 by halftime) … on the other side of the court – Oak Hill …

  Coach Persin with 757+ W’s … an Oaks TEAM which plays fundamentally sound hoops at both ends of the floor … outstanding D …

AND last but not least 6-4 “man in the middle” Chase Hammond …

CH is as strong a post player as you will find, probably inch for inch the BEST post player I have seen this season … strong, stronger, strongest physically AND not the least of importance is Coach Persin “teaches/has taught” Chase Hammond HOW TO PLAY in the post position – getting position/hand positions to receive the pass from the perimeter/ the footwork of a post player/ the knowledge as to how to get the defender out of position & seal him off … at the same time Coach Persin TEACHERS his perimeter people “how to feed the post !” it always amazes me at the size some teams have in the post but can’t take advantage because the players – in the post or the perimeter players – have not been taught how to play their positions to take advantage of the “physical advantage” they have … Chase Hammond is outstanding … he doesn’t TRY to do MORE than what the defender gives him, but he works to make himself available on the blocks … when he gets the ball – advantage Hammond – 26 points 8/9 from the FT line … Hammond 26 CG 29 a final … Oak Hill 53 Coal Grove 29 a final …

… saw some described Oak Hill as boring … I personally smile the entire game when watching teams that are fundamentally sound teams – Oak Hill … players who have been taught the basics of the game – the triple threat position, simple chest passes, bounce passes … I watch Oak Hill – the goal is perfection in the half court – movement without the ball, making the pass the first option vs the dribble … defense that emphasizes footwork, putting a body on the offensive player, keeping offensive players on the opposition from getting to the spots on the floor that they want to get to, disrupting the flow of the opposing offense … not sure how anyone can argue against Coach Persin being a “legend” court side with 757+ wins to his credit … if you coach/teach fundamentals to every single player from your best to the last man on the bench you will be a good TEAM, when that same philosophy is applied year in year out – the years when the physical talents of your players are outstanding to go along with the fundamentals THEN you have ELITE TEAMS …
